CANYONEERING

Canyoneering Guided Trip - $135 Per Person

Imagine hiking up a mountain trail that parallels a deep canyon, down below you hear water flowing over the rocky canyon bottom.

You reach a point where the trail crosses the stream. After dressing for the descent, you start following the watercourse down canyon, dealing with obstacles as they come. Ropes, harnesses and specialized training become the method of travel as you rappel down waterfalls and build specialty anchors at each drop. You may swim, wade or downclimb as you hike your way through the canyon. A 30 minute drive from downtown Los Angeles will bring you to our Canyoneering routes with ATS AdventureWorks One Day Guided Trips.

FAQ

Basic Information on the Trip

Meetup Location / Fall - Winter

Meetup Location / Spring - Summer

  • What is Canyoneering?

Canyoneering is the technical descent of a canyon using ropes, harnesses, and other technical gear rappelling waterfalls as you encounter them.

  • What is the minimum and maximum age requirement?

Our age minimum is 15. We currently do not have an age maximum. Our oldest client is 82 years old.

  • When is the best time of year to go?

Since SoCal has great weather year round we are lucky enough to run great canyon routes year round. In the Summer and Fall we tend to stick to San Antonio Falls on Mt. Baldy which is a great beginner route with  six amazing rappels and in the Winter months we normally find ourselves in Rubio Canyon near Pasadena which comes with seven rappels down six waterfalls.

  • Are the guides experienced?

Our staff are some of the most experienced canyoneering guides in the country. They are all actively certified by Alpine Training Services and posses wilderness medical training. They literally take hundreds and hundreds of people canyoneering each year.

  • How many people can go?

Every trip needs a minimum of 4 people to run and barring special circumstances will have a maximum of 12 clients. Most trips end up with 6-8 people. Only one person at a time can rappel, however it’s never a dull moment with our crew!

  • What can I expect?

Expect to hike in about 45 minutes to our canyon drop-in. Depending on the time of year, you will be descending 5-6 waterfalls with heights ranging from 20 feet to 110 feet. After a 20 minute hike out, you’ll be back at your vehicle.

  • What do I pack?

Upon registration you’ll receive a packet that includes a to-bring list. For the most part, we ask you come in some shoes and clothes that you’re willing to get wet. You’ll also need lunch and water. We supply layers to wear and all the technical gear including helmets.

  • Is it safe?

We do our best to ensure the safety of our clients. You will have to sign a waiver when you participate and agree that there are elements beyond our control. Canyoneering as a sport is quite safe and ATS as a company is proud to have a perfect safety record.

The Canyoneering one day guided trip meet up location is either in Altadena or San Dimas depending on the time of the year (see below). Trips run 7 days a week, 365 days a year upon request. Each one day guided trip meets at 9 am and returns between 3:30 and 5:30. The day will consist of meeting at our selected location where we will disitribute all technical items needed for our adventure. After a short drive to the canyon, we will begin a 45 minute hike to the first rappel. From the start to finish, there are 6 rappels down waterfalls ranging from 15' to 100'. After completion of descending through these waterfalls, there is a 20 minute hike back to the cars. Each person should bring lightweight hiking clothes and tennis or hiking shoes that can get wet. They should also have a pair of dry clothes and shoes for after the day is over. Since this is a full day event, each participant will need to bring a lunch and plenty of water.

Participants must be over the age of 12, be able to hike uneven terrain while wearing a backpack, weigh less than 300 pounds and have a size 41 inch waist or smaller.
